Give to United Way

Help us solve the 757’s biggest problems and give everyone the opportunity to thrive.

No organization is better equipped than United Way to connect volunteer to the needs in South Hampton Roads. We’ve been working to help people in our communities for nearly 100 years and we partner with more than 180 different nonprofits throughout the region. We have the capability and the capacity to connect you to countless volunteer opportunities so you can invest your time and talent in something you’re passionate about.

Care to Open Your Closet?

November 13, 2021 | 9 a.m. - Noon

Women United is hosting a collection drive to stock care closets at some of our local hospitals which provide clothing for patients who need proper attire when they are released. We're collecting gently used elastic waist pants, t-shirts, coats and flip flops, as well as new under garments for these women and men. Please take a moment to clear your closet and bring your items to one of our two drop off locations - your wardrobe and your community will thank you!

Holiday Extravaganza

We're on a mission to make the holidays a little brighter for 150 families in need. For most of us, the holiday season is a time of joy, but for our neighbors struggling to make ends meet, the holidays can be a real source of stress and sadness. Everyone deserves to enjoy this magical time, so we're hosting a Holiday Extravaganza complete with gifts, food, family-friendly activities and lots of holiday cheer! We hope you and your family, friends and colleagues will join our extravaganza.

Looking for ways to engage and retain staff while giving back to the community? Whether you’re looking for unique, rewarding team-building opportunities, business-to-business networking or a great fit for your corporate social responsibility platform, United Way can meet your company’s needs. Our volunteer engagement staff will help craft a custom volunteer experience that will be fun, and most importantly, something of consequence. Examples include:

  • Hosting a site visit for students to learn more about your industry
  • Assembling kits of schools supplies or hygiene items
  • Planning a teacher appreciation day for teachers at a low-income school
  • Reading to children at local schools
  • Hosting a food or household items drive

This year, we had nearly 800 volunteers from 15 companies come together to complete 125 projects at 39 local agencies. Thanks to all who made Day of Caring such a success! Our tentative date for Day of Caring 2022 is September 16.

We are always looking for experienced, passionate professionals with varying skills to join on boards and committees. You’ll put your talents to great use while creating connections with other community leaders, building skills, and learning more about United Way and our local community.

If you are interested in learning more about any these opportunities, please contact our Volunteerism Manager at volunteer@unitedwayshr.org.
