Women United Annual Fall Luncheon - October 5, 2016
What is truly possible was evident at our 13th Annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon on Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Our keynote speaker, Helen Dragas shared two valuable lessons she learned from her family: ‘There is a direct and inseparable correlation between the outcomes we want and the time and effort each of us is willing to invest to achieve it.’ And ‘There is no such thing as a weaker sex.’ As women united, we have begun to come of age - our voices are being heard and we are in a unique position to help more women and their families rise above. We couldn’t do it without all of you.  Thank you for attending and making a commitment to your community.

United Way Day of Action 2016
On Saturday, June 18, more than 200 volunteers and their families  "flipped" four schools to help launch the summer programs at Chesterfield Academy, Jacox Elementary, P.B. Young, Sr. Elementary School and Ghent Elementary (Tidewater Park)! Volunteers spent the morning decorating more nearly 100 bulletin boards in summer themes to make the Summer LEAP experience special.  Participants also donated thousands of much-needed supplies for the children and families of the neighborhoods. More than 1,000 students are signed up for the 6-week academic/earned enrichment program, with a goal of reducing summer learning loss, increasing reading and math skills, and developing skills like teamwork, responsibility, critical thinking, communication, and resilience. The schools are part of our United for Children partnership to drive educational success for our poorest children as a way out of poverty.  Thank you to everyone who made the event a success! Here is a short video to show the 2016 Day Of Action!

Women United Annual Spring Luncheon 2016
Thank you to the more than 100 women who attended our WLC Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, May 3rd at the Virginia Beach Westin.  We had a great day!  Carol McCormack, president and CEO of United Way shared the story of how the Women’s Leadership Council became a “disruptive” force charging the United Way to think about our work differently, more collectively, more holistically, and more collaboratively.  This ultimately led to the creation of United for Children.

African American Leadership Society Service Project 2016
AALS members rolled up their sleeves to help families in our community during our service project at the Foodbank. The Foodbank of Southeastern VA provides nutritious canned, boxed, fresh, frozen, and prepared food to hundreds of thousands of individuals annually. This food is recovered and secured from restaurants, supermarkets, food distributors, the USDA, farmers, wholesalers, sportsmen, and through food and fund drives.  Members spent the morning packing bags/boxes with essential items. Thank you to everyone who gave of their time to make good things happen for our friends and neighbors!

Women's Leadership Council Stone Soup - February 2016
On Saturday, at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, members of the Women's Leadership Council and their families came together in the spirit of Stone Soup to prepare meals for several United Way agencies. We had a great turnout of more than 150 participants! Together, we prepared over 400 assorted casseroles and 600 PB&J brown bag lunches! Please see the short video capturing the 2016 Stone soup event!
