Meet Cymone

November 1, 2021

When you meet Cymone now, it’s hard to believe she and her family experienced homelessness just a few short years ago. After the death of her grandmother and mother derailed many of her plans, the single mother, who was pregnant with twins at the time, ended up in the shelter program at ForKids. There she found safety and stability, and she learned about Aspire, a Mobility Mentoring©-Informed Partnership launched and funded by United Way's Women United.

Through Aspire, Cymone was introduced to her coach who helped guide and encourage her as she laid a path for her family. In the 18 months since Cymone started working with her mentor, she has set and achieved more than 30 goals! She has focused on spending more quality time with her children and made her education a top priority. Cymone currently holds the highest rating in her classes at the Virginia Technical Academy where she is working to become a Master Electrician. She started the program with a scholarship from Workforce Innovation and Opportunity (WIOA) and her academic achievements were recently recognized by Women in Construction (WIC) with a full scholarship to allow her to finish her certification debt-free. At her scholarship ceremony, she shared information on how to apply for a scholarship with other women in her program – paying it forward and acting as a mentor to her fellow students.

In addition to her education, Cymone has also set financial goals. With extra encouragement from financial incentives baked into the Aspire program, she is working to increase her credit score, pay off debt and build her savings to ensure a better future for herself and her children.

Cymone has so many reasons to be proud and continues to dream big with goals to own her own electrician business one day. The support and encouragement Cymone found through Aspire proved to be the catalyst that has helped unlock her full potential and change the trajectory of her life!
