CHESAPEAKE -– On April 22, 2010, the City of Chesapeake will be hosting its second Project Homeless Connect Day at the Dr. Clarence V. Cuffee Community Center, 2019 Windy Road, Chesapeake VA 23324, from 1:00- 6:00 p.m. This one-day, one-stop shop event is designed to help homeless families connect with resources needed to help move toward self sufficiency.
This event is free and is sponsored by the Chesapeake Coalition for the Homeless and supported by a variety of other agencies. The purpose of this event is to embrace Chesapeake’s less fortunate homeless families and provide them with opportunities for medical and dental services, employment assistance, and a variety of other services that we usually take for granted. Giveaways of basic provisions will include items such as personal hygiene items.
Throughout the day, hot meals, snacks, day care and free transportation to the site will be provided.

Project Homeless Connect has evolved from the Chesapeake Coalition for the Homeless Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness, which calls for efforts by the entire community, including government, faith-based, private and nonprofit organizations, and local businesses, to partner and find solutions to end homelessness.
Statistics compiled from the City’s only emergency shelter, Our House Families, indicated that during FY 2008, 1,842 persons were turned away. Of this group, 1,070 were children. Our House Families has seen a 47% increase in homeless families. Emergency shelter was provided to 41 families, of this group 116 were children. Transitional housing was provided to 9 families; of this group 15 were children. Our House Families was contacted by 1,045 families for financial assistance; of this group 123 received financial assistance for utilities and/or rental assistance.
