Improving the Health of Children and Adults
Health is a basic human need, impacting every aspect of a person’s daily life. Health problems often lead to increased school absences among children, as well as increased on-the-job absences by adults. A family without health insurance is at greater risk of going bankrupt due to a serious illness. Seniors without prescription assistance face the frightening decision of choosing which vital medicines to take. By supporting health, we can give people in each generation hope, dignity and a future.
United Way of South Hampton Roads addresses the urgent need to make health care a right not a privilege. By assisting the medically underinsured with discounts for needed prescriptions through the distribution of Family Wize Discount Prescription Cards and working closely with Access Partnership, United Way is improving disparities in the health status of our community.
United, we will the health of children and adults in South Hampton Roads.

Our Challenge:
A 2004 statistic estimated that there were 156,000 medically uninsured persons in South Hampton Roads, an undoubtedly growing statistic in today’s tough economic times. Many low paying and entry level jobs are without health benefits. In 2005 and 2006, fifty percent of bankruptcies were caused by medical debt. The Hampton Roads area has an infant mortality rate of 9.5 per 1,000 births, compared to the state’s rate of 7.1 per 1000.
