Free Prescription Drug Discount Cards | Print |

For nearly two years United Way of South Hampton Roads and their partners, Access Partnership and  FamilyWize have made discount prescription cards available to local residents struggling to pay their bills.  In the last two years, 40% of the U.S. population either didn’t buy medicine they needed or reduced the required dosage because of the high cost!

United Way is pleased to offer the FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount card. This card is free, with no enrollment, activation or fees nor are there any age or income restrictions. The card can be used by the whole family and is for people with no insurance or for medicine not covered by insurance, Medicare or other benefit plans.

 The cards are available free of charge to anyone with no prescription drug coverage. The can reduce prescription drug costs by 20% or more. The discount is made possible as part of an in-kind donation by Membership Services Corporation of Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

In June of 2007, United Way of South Hampton Roads distributed more than 250,000 Family Wize prescription drug discount cards to pharmacies and has continued to distribute the cards to present day.

How Does the Card Work?09_RxCard.jpg

Users simply give the card to the pharmacists with the prescription from their doctor. An instant discount—discount varies by medication—is applied to the perscription cost. If the pharmacy price is already lower than the familyWise price, users will pay the lowest price.

All FDA approved brand and generic prescription medications are covered with the exception of mail order prescription services.

Who Can Use the Card?

These FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards can be used by everyone in the community. Not just people with no insurance.

They can be used by:

  • people with health insurance, Medicaid or Medicare during deductible periods;
  • or medications not covered by their plan
  • for people with Medicare Part D during the "doughnut hole "

The cards cannot be used simultaneously on the same prescription to get a discount on the co-pay for example, but it can be used if a prescription plan doesn't cover a particular drug.
