Project Homeless Connect -
Not a service fair . . .
Not an information and referral event . . .
An innovation. A One-Day *consumer-focused* One-Stop
The Chesapeake Family Project Homeless Connect was organized by the Chesapeake Coalition to End Homlessness to help lower barriers between less fortunate families and the services they need.
Project Homeless Connect is equal parts welcoming homeless neighbors
into the life of the community, changing the way resources are
accessed, and achieving quantifiable results for people experiencing homelessness.
Chesapeake
Coalition for
the Homeless, of which the United Way of South Hampton Roads is a part, is made up of non-profit organizations, churches, and
Federal, State, and Local government departments interested in ending
homelessness.
Adults were welcome to bring their
children to the family-focused event, who were occupied in an activity room stocked with snacks and
balloon animals while their parents connected with services.
In addition to connecting with affordable child care, the services available included the Virginia
Employment
Commission, housing, medical screening, vision screening, Veterans Association,
Social Security Administration, Legal Aid, food, food stamps
application.
