What is the Race for Literacy?
The United Way of South Hampton Roads Race for Literacy is a healthy community event showcasing the beautiful homes and business industry of boomin North Suffolk. An estimated 500 runners form the Hampton Roads region are expected to pace their way through the Harbour View Community, the future stronghold of the Tidewater area.
Run, walk, and cheer for the whole family in the 10 miler, 5k or 1 mile kids fun run. Awaiting the runners at the finish line is the fun festival, including local cuisine, beer, and vendors. All proceeds of the event support Suffolk literacy programs.
Why Literacy?
Literacy is the most essential skill children acquire in school! Whether reading a street sign or an application, to be successful children and adults need the ability to communicate through reading and writing. The adult illiteracy rate in Suffolk, Virginia is 32% and he entire Hampton Roads region is lacking in literacy compared to Virginia state benchmarks! Building literacy will build a successful future for us all. United Way of South Hampton Roads's public reading programs focus on preparing children for school and life, recognizing that sometimes helping kids starts with helping their parents.
