When I agreed to serve as the Tocqueville Society Chairman, I did so because I deeply believe in the impact our United Way makes in this community. I have great respect for the commitment and loyalty of our membership in the Tocqueville Society. Thanks to our dedicated Cabinet, I am pleased to report that we welcomed 19 new members, whose names you will find listed under Orders of Recognition on page 11. This brings the Society's total membership to over 160. Collectively, this generous membership has pledged over $2.5 million, a critical base of support for our community. On behalf of the United Way of South Hampton Roads and all 68 health and human service agencies they serve, I thank you.
Together, we are tackling the issues that matter most in our community and creating lasting changes that improve lives by focusing on three areas of advancement:
Income: Promoting Financial Stability and Independence
- Financial Stability Partnership is an initiative aimed at helping individuals and families attain and preserve assets, become more financially stable, and achieve long-term economic independence.
Health: Improving the Health of Children and Adults
- Access Partnership is a community collaboration that addresses important health issues in Hampton Roads. Successes of this partnership include expanding the Oral Health Coalition and managing care programs to the Ambulatory Care Center at Norfolk General and Park Place Medical Center.
Education: Helping Children and Youth Achieve Their Potential
- BornlearningTM is an innovative public engagement campaign that helps parents, grandparents, and caregivers explore ways to turn everyday moments into fun learning opportunities.
I am convinced that there are many more successful members of our community that can join our effort. As Chair I am very optimistic that working with the Cabinet (listed on page 3) and the talented United Way staff we will build the membership of the Tocqueville Society and the donations that support so many families in our community. Please help our efforts by discussing the United Way with potential members and forward names to me for follow-up. Referrals from you are the best vehicle we have to build our membership. As a group our goal is to bring our membership to over 200 members in the next couple of years.
It is my privilege to work with you and to help the United Way improve the lives of those in need in South Hampton Roads. Alexis de Tocqueville wrote, "Never lose sight of the close connection between the private fortune of each and the prosperity of all." Thank you again for your continued generous support of the United Way of South Hampton Roads Tocqueville Society.
2010 Chair, Tocqueville Society

Thank you for your strong and bold support in the Tocqueville Society of South Hampton Roads. As the end of the year approaches, I want to remind you of the selfless gift you give to many faceless people, many of whom are children in our community who are struggling to survive. By your support of United Way, we are also working on long term goals for our community along with community partners to build a strong education for our children, financial stability, and health care assistance.
We began the campaign with 161 members of the society and a robust Cabinet. Our first event was the 7th annual CEO/Community Leaders Luncheon hosted by Heritage Bank with Admiral Prueher as the Keynote speaker. He, along with his wife, Suzanne have joined us as members of the Tocqueville Society. Admiral Prueher gave us an amazing insight into China and his thoughts for future relations with China. Our next opportunity to gather as a group was at the marvelous home of Susan and Dubby Wynne for our annual membership event. The night was perfect and everyone enjoyed mingling inside and out, savoring great company and delicious food. A heart felt thanks to the Wynnes for so generously opening their home and sponsoring this fantastic night! Our Bench and Bar members participated in a wonderful breakfast hosted by Amerigroup and Stan Baldwin, whose briefing on Amerigroup from the General Counsel's perspective was enlightening. And as always, the Tocqueville women are setting the pace in Leadership Giving with a VIP reception prior to the annual Women's Leadership Council (WLC) luncheon, and a 10 for 10 luncheon at the beautiful home of Joan Brock. Thanks to the hard work of Joan's 10 for 10 Council committee, this program already has three new members for 2010. To date we have 19 new Tocqueville members! We are edging ever closer to the goal of 200 total members in the Tocqueville Society.

Our annual dinner this year was hosted by Dubby and Susan Wynne, at their elegant home in Virginia Beach. The evening was filled with warmth and laughter as our members and guests mingled outside in the beautiful gardens and inside around the tables filled with delicious food. David Arias welcomed everyone and shared his personal commitment to the Tocqueville Society. Mike Hughes talked about United Way’s involvement in Financial Stability and thanked everyone for their leadership and high example of philanthropy. Reggie Corinaldi updated everyone on the work of the African American Leadership Giving Initiative. Joan Brock gave an inspiring update on the 10 for 10 Council and honored our 10 for 10 women for 2009. Many attendees were honored with service awards for their loyal generosity to our Society, including our gracious hosts, who for 20 years have faithfully given. A special thanks to everyone who worked to make this event into a beautiful evening.
