Take me out to the ball game,
I've made my community proud.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I just know I'll always give back.
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If we don't bring change it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
If it all stays the same. |
The Young Leaders Society gathered together for an exciting night at Harbor Park as the Norfolk Tides took on the Charlotte Knights! We had a picnic with hotdogs and hamburgers prior to enjoying the game from our box seats and stuck around to see fireworks after the game! Photos.

The Young Leaders Society is a diverse group of South Hampton Roads residents who value community giving and involvement. Anne Bostain Legum is one of our newer YLS members and a member of the Workforce Management Team at Cox Communications. Kathleen Day, YLS Executive Committee Member, sat down with her to see what brought her to YLS and what attracts her to public service.
Kathleen: What motivated you to get involved with YLS and United Way and what keeps you motivated?
Anne: United Way supports responsible organizations
that make a concentrated, meaningful impact in our community. It's easy to see the effect that your donation (time or monetary) has on the numerous organizations that United Way backs. I joined YLS because the group provides a strong network to bring about change and makes South Hampton Roads a better place to live. I remain motivated because there are many exciting opportunities as a member,
including volunteering as a group in many non-profit organizations, professional development, networking and insight into important community issues.
Kathleen: What is your favorite YLS event and why?
Anne: I'm new to YLS, and all of the events that I've attended so far have been great! I have to say that the Summer Family Volunteer Project benefitting Samaritan House has been my favorite event. We had a wonderful group of excited volunteers and some big personalities, which made the day a lot of fun! We combined efforts to clean and paint the Samaritan House office. It was teamwork at its best!
Kathleen: What made you want to help out with the Summer Family Volunteer Project?
Anne: Samaritan House is an incredible organization that empowers many members of our
Kathleen: What other community service projects are you involved with?
Anne: So far this year, YLS has provided most of my community service activities. I also volunteer with my husband in various fundraising activities for organizations such as The Up Center, which is another wonderful United Way agency.
Kathleen: If someone wanted to get more involved in their community, what next steps would you suggest them taking?
Anne: If you want to become more involved in your community, I suggest determining what types of community issues are important to you. From there, you can research organizations that support those issues. Stay informed and speak up about key community concerns and ask questions to motivate change. Encourage your friends, family and co-workers to get involved with issues that they are passionate about. You can contact the United Way and join leadership groups, like YLS, that mobilize volunteer support. Being involved in the community is easy and it's fun. Go ahead, get started!
Kathleen: How have you managed to juggle work, a personal life and volunteering?
Anne: Support. I'm very lucky to have a husband, family, friends and employer who are all encouraging and supportive of community activities. We share a common interest in and dedication to helping others through charitable donation and volunteer activities, and we often do them together. When life gets hectic, I just remember that the time and money that I can give, no matter how small, makes a difference in the community.
Kathleen: Any other words of wisdom you want to pass on to other YLS Members?
Anne: By joining YLS, you've joined a group of motivated leaders who are committed to making a difference in South Hampton Roads. We're neighbors and friends (or will be soon!) who want to help change others' lives for the better through donation, advocacy and volunteering our time and efforts. Use the opportunities that YLS provides, through a united effort, to help those in need. Also, take advantage of the numerous professional development events and social networking activities that YLS organizes. You've already made the first step by joining YLS, keep the momentum going. As John Quincy Adams said, "if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." Inspire others through YLS.

United Way is working to advance the common good by focusing on Education, Income and Health: the building blocks for a good life. But we can't do it alone. We need the heads, hands and hearts of committed people like you to help us tackle the problems facing our communities. Each one of us has special talents and things we can do to help.
Over 30 YLS Members and their family members put their talents to work for our community, lent some muscle and volunteered with the Young Leaders Society for our annual Summer Family Volunteer Project benefitting Samaritan House! We spent the day painting Samaritan House's donation room and children's playroom, cleaning windows and washing the organization's vehicles and bus! Thank you to all who spent their Saturday LIVING UNITED! More photos.
