Volunteer - United Way of South Hampton Roads

United Way Volunteers Give Back a Year

In one day, 8,820 hours were given in service across Hampton Roads. Norfolk, VA – On September 11th, United Way’s Annual Day of Caring attracted 1,787 volunteers. From chaperoning fishing trips to gardening, painting and building decks, volunteers completed over 100 local service projects. Employees from Sentara Healthcare, Towne Bank, Dominion Enterprises, City of Virginia Beach, PRA Group and 60 other local companies spent their day in the service of others, giving more than 8,820 hours - equaling more than a year’s worth of time.

Volunteers ranged from students to city managers and everything in between, including the 350 middle school students from Norfolk Academy who volunteered at St. Mary’s Home, Harbor’s Edge and P.B. Young Sr. Elementary, “I was fortunate enough to witness the brightness on their faces and their willingness to work and serve our school community. One student in particular hadn’t even set his book bag down before he was moving a desk! I love it! Thank you!” - Dr. Sharon Phillips, Principal at PB Young Sr. Elementary.

Volunteers and the organizations they assisted were full of positivity and encouragement as the day unfolded, “The employees of Virginia Natural Gas have volunteered with us every single Day of Caring…They are 100% dedicated to our mission and we love them for it,” said a representative of ForKids. “I was so grateful for the opportunity to participate,” one volunteer added.

Volunteers still have work to do. Some Day of Caring projects are ongoing through the month of September, including supporting Hunger Action Month for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Hunger Action Month runs through September 30th; more info on setting up a food or fund drive can be found at foodbankonline.org. Additionally, for the second year, artists with AltDaily will design and paint murals at a United for Children school. This year the artists will work with students and teachers on both an indoor and outdoor mural at Jacox Elementary School to be completed later this month.

United Way's Annual Day of Caring

Day of Caring was established in 1991 to promote the spirit of volunteerism, increase awareness of local human service organization and demonstrate how people working together for the common good can accomplish great things.

We match local volunteers in the South Hampton Roads community to nonprofit organizations and schools to complete tasks such as landscaping, painting, gardening and direct client support. Participating in Day of Caring promotes workplace unity, builds morale and shows leadership in the community.
