Volunteer

Advancing the common good is a goal for which we can all strive. Our combined efforts, how we LIVE UNITED-is a way we can join hands to help children and families, those living alone, or those struggling to find something to eat, a place to live, or a reason to hope, find a way to make it on their own.

These volunteers have opened their minds, reached out their hand, opened their heart, raised their voice and shown how they make a difference.

Renee Wampler
Community Leader

Renee Wampler is a great example of a WLC member! In the past year she has been very instrumental in the volunteer projects with WLC. As a part of the WLC Volunteer Committee she helped in the planning process for Stone Soup and is taking the lead on the WLC Day of Action project. It was her idea for the WLC part of Day of Action to create Summer Supply bags to keep students at P.B. Young, Sr. Elementary School engaged while on break.

Carolyn Abron McCadden

You may remember Carolyn Abron McCadden as one of our Super Heroes from last year's Awards Finale Luncheon. She doesn't stop being Super Woman there! Carolyn began giving in1973 when she first started working 38 years ago. She has served in many positions with United Way of South Hampton Roads and numerous other organizations in our community:

She has served as UWSHR’s Board Member and Board Chair, Women’s Leadership Board and Board Chair, Funding Panel Member and Panel Chair.

She also volunteers at Ebenezer Baptist Church, in Portsmouth, VA. Serving as Chair, of their Trustee Ministry, Sunday School Teacher, and in their Fit and Faithful Ministry.

Carolyn also serves on the board for ForKids and the Virginia Center For Inclusive Communities Board Chair.

During our funding meetings it was touching to hear this Carolyn repeatedly give firsthand accounts of her boots on the ground knowledge of many of our agencies because she volunteers to serve so often, serving in a soup kitchen or mentoring.

Last year we recognized her as our Spirit of South Hampton Roads at our 2010-2011 Awards Finale Luncheon. We'd also like to congratulate Carolyn on her recent nomination and award for YWCA's Woman of Distinction for her work in volunteerism!

This year marks the beginning of Vivian’s 30th year as a United Way funding volunteer! She currently serves on the education panel, however since 1982 she has volunteered on other  panels.  “I have fully enjoyed my entire time with United Way and getting to know the agencies.  It has been a great learning experience on how United Way tries to be good stewards of public funds.  I have enjoyed meeting numerous volunteers—it has been a delight.”

Vivian is a native of Norfolk and went to Norfolk State College (now Norfolk State University) and transferred to Virginia State in Petersburg, VA.  She has her Master’s degree from Old Dominion University and was certified in Public School Administration from ODU.
