Judeo-Christian Outreach Center: Bernie
Bernie had been there before, cycling in and out of emergency shelters. She’s a street smart college graduate, who has a police record and often turned to prostitution to support her habitual drug use. Now in her early 40's, the police discharged her to Judeo Christian Outreach Center.
Her sentence of four years for possession had heen suspended because of good behavior. However, she was homeless and had no place to go. She arrived at the shelter and her case manager immediately enrolled her in substance abuse counseling. With the support of JCOC, Bernie became committed to her up-hill battle for recovery.
The Children's Center's Team Aproach to Care for Children with Disablilities
Through early intervention, pediatric therapy, and Early Head Start programs, the Children’s Center is taking a team approach to the care of Sarah, a child who recently came to the center facing multiple challenges.
Sarah was diagnosed with intractable generalized seizures. This type of seizure is uncontrolled and affects both hemispheres of the brain. The staff at the Children’s Center is working with her to learn basic skills such as sitting up, rolling over, focusing with her eyes, moving her legs and arms independently of each other, and making babbling sounds.
Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia: Help Senior Regain Financial Stability
At one point in his life, Charles (not his real name) had bills and financial responsibilities which were so overwhelming that he felt like he was drowning in debt. There were mounting credit card payments to make, unexpected medical expenses, and collection agencies calling his home.
Fortunately for Charles, a friend recommended that he seek help from the debt management counselors at Catholic Charities. Through their comprehensive one-on-one counseling sessions and consumer education programs, he learned what he calls “life saving skills” that included how to set up a family budget, pay off overdue bills and improve his credit score.
