Nate is one of 180 individuals living in one of Virginia Supportive Housing's apartment buildings in Hampton Roads.

Nate served proudly for more than 10 years in the Marines. After returning to civilian life, he was able to secure employment as a truck driver, using the skills he learned serving our country.

Unfortunately, back pain from an old injury forced Nate to take time off for recovery.  When he was able to return, he found his position had been eliminated.

Nate was able to find work again, but shortly that position also was eliminated. Nate was forced to live in his car and work whatever jobs he could find. Still struggling with pain, Nate was referred to the Hampton V.A. Hospital where he was able to receive the proper medical treatment - but not a solution to his homelessness. While recovering, Nate learned about Virginia Supportive Housing and was accepted to live in one of their apartments.

In 2011, Nate signed the contract and moved into his very own apartment. He now attends Tidewater Community College and is working toward an Associate Degree in Radiology Technology. When Nate isn't studying, he assists other residents in the apartment building with vehicle repairs.

Grant's struggles began before he was even born and continued throughout his childhood. He was delivered at 37 weeks weighing just over five pounds with a rare birth defect in which his intestines were twisted and certain organs were misplaced.      At age two, Grant was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). Shortly after his third year well-baby exam, Grant regressed rapidly and was formally diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.   Searching for a way to help their son cope with his anxiety and chronic health problems, Grant's parents discovered EQUI-KIDS .Through their proven program, Grant has transformed from a shy, scared toddler to a daredevil on horseback!   His motor skills, body awareness, and coordination have improved dramatically.

"From my perspective, I feel like we are part of the EQUI-KIDS family and I'm so grateful for what they have done for Grant," said Grant's Mother. "Every volunteer and staff member is there to make a difference in a child's life with the help of the most loving and gentle of animals."

Grant isn't "different"; he isn't teased or stared at. He is embraced for who he is and nurtured to achieve things we never thought possible.

Fitness Class Primeplus Norfolk Senior Center www.primeplus.org

Primeplus Norfolk Senior Center (PPNSC) is dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents in South Hampton Roads ages 50 and older by providing programming to support intellectual, physical, emotional and social needs and has been the pre-eminent focal point for services, activities, and information addressing the needs and interests of older adults in South Hampton Roads since 1968.

Currently, Primeplus is facing a legislative challenge pending adoption of the upcoming budget for Virginia that would cut in half the state funding for the center.

The Norfolk center, which receives about $30,000 from the state, provides adult day care, meals, health care services and activities to help seniors stay active and to avoid more costly nursing home expenses.

In an effort to be more fiscally responsible and diversified in funding, Primeplus will celebrate it's 3rd Annual Men Who Cook fundraiser on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the Masonic Temple on Granby Street.

Twenty five local amateur chef teams pair up to show off their culinary skills and prepare specialty dishes. Guest are able to dance and dine. For more information, click here to download the flyer.
